Waterboarding doesn't seem to be a matter of time,
however. It's effective in a matter of seconds.

Exactly! The report I heard was Sheik Kahlid Mohammed cracked in about 30 seconds and begged and cried not to have it done again. He gave information that was corroborated and verified and ended up preventing terrorist attacks. Yes, it may sound cruel to terrorize one man for thirty seconds or so, but he is given the option to cooperate and save lives and his torment stops.  That same person would have been reveling in delight to see innocent people killed and maimed had he not been captured and the information not extracted. It just amazes me that anybody would go easy on such a bastard as SKM or anybody else in a position to know details of impending disasters that could be prevented. These people want to kill you. All we want from them is the information to stop them. These interrogation techniques are not methods of revenge or expressions of hatred, they are a means of gaining information from people intent on killing innocent civilians which could include children in a school one day.
