Saul Zaentz, an American, produced it.

Zaentz bought the rights from the Tolkien estate in, I believe, 
the '70s for $100,000 which was considered way, way too much.  Why?  
Because pre-CAD the books were considered impossible to do...so they 
essentially gave the rights away.

Well, that $100,000.00 investment has turned into a $3 trillion 
worldwide gross...and that's not counting merchandising, rentals, 
DVDs, etc.
