That's not how I took the comment. When I read it, I thought: that's weird; Kerry is having a flashback to the '60s when there was a draft and if one didn't stay in school (and get what I think they called back then an academic deferment) one faced getting drafted. So it didn't make sense when I read it, but that's how I interpreted it. Especially in light of other comments that I have read about the Iraq war coming from other politicians that were a flashback to the Vietnam era. For example I think it was Charles Rangel (but I'm not 100% sure) who said that the Iraq war was discriminative because there was, like Vietnam, a disproportionately high number of minorities who served (which may be true for Iraq but wasn't for Vietnam, despite the myth that was built up that that was the case).
