With all due respect, you really *haven't* spent much time with women in a tight, hierarchical group, have you? Being on Mother Divine is the highest you can rise in the organization without fucking someone. (For example, being the untitled wife of a "Raja.") If one is drawn to being one of the the foci of attention within an organization in which only the top tiers get that attention, you'll do anything to rise that level and stay there. Even if it makes you miserable. Just my opinion, but one based on watching women in several different hierarchically-organized spiritual groups. It's one reason that I avoid them like the plague these days and only gravitate toward organ- izations that are structured using a relational model.
