Just so this isn't all bitching, here's a suggestion
for how to keep it from happening next time. Put
some *muscle* behind the laws against such things.

In France there are some great TV ads as part of the
fight against child prostitution worldwide. They
show really cute, nubile young women in different
parts of the world, in the bars where they work as
prostitutes. As each one appears, the text on the
screen tells their age -- "14 years," "15 years,"
"12 years," etc. Then they show a scene of the French
police arriving at some guy's door and putting hand-
cuffs on him and taking him away, and the text simply
reads, "Ten years." I'll bet that such a campaign
hits its mark.

So why not *tough* laws against this sort of election
practice? No fines -- they do nothing to deter the
rich folks who do this stuff, who can afford both the
lawyers to defend against any charges and the fines
themselves. Instead, why not set a mandatory sentence
of ten years (with no possibility of parole or lessen-
ing of sentence) for anyone and everyone who can be
tied to such an act?

I think it would help to put an end to it. But I'm
not exactly hopeful that such a law will ever be
passed, because frankly the Democrats don't want to
rule such tactics out any more than the Republicans
do. These tactics *work*, and if you're desperate
enough, you want to be able to use them with little
fear of the legal ramifications.

Take this lack of fear away, and you might see some
change in American elections. Another possibility is
to institute a ruling that if such tricks are used
in a two-person election, no matter *who* pays for it,
the other candidate automatically wins. Then *both*
parties would be on the lookout for such practices,
and doing their best to prevent them from happening.
