Your story reminds me of a wonderful L.A. TM Center
meeting I attended back in 1978. A group of...uh...
overzealous Governors proposed that they make a tour
of the homes of other TM teachers in the area to make
sure they didn't have any Off The Program books on
their shelves or anything else that would "reflect
badly on Maharishi or suggest that TM teachers needed
anything that was offered by other traditions."

After they made this suggestion, I stood up and
seconded it, saying that recently I had been in the
homes of several TM teachers and had seen books on
their shelves by Yogananda, Carlos Castaneda, Ramana
Maharshi, and Tibetan teachers. As I was saying this,
expressing my horror at seeing such things, I was
careful to look directly at each of the five people
who had made the proposal, subtly conveying the
message that it was *their* homes and *their* book-
shelves I was talking about.

The motion was tabled, and never made it to a vote.
