Subject: Re: New TM school in KS to cost $500 million - expensive to travel
to/from

The nearest airport to Smith Center is Salina KS 2:37 hours 122
miles, mainly USAirways, $205 from Chicago even months in advance.
Drive from airport services are about $200. The closest Amtrak is
Holdrege, Nebraska 79 miles 1:43 drive.

By contrast, Fairfield has CID 1:40, MLI 2:00, and DSM 2:25 with more
airlines, and cheaper flights. Driver services are about $100.
Amtrak is at Mt. Pleasant 0:30 only $35 to Chicago.

Sample flight comparison 3/15/2007 shows SLN about $100 more each way
JFK to MLI - $144
JFK to SLN - $241

The airport in Smith Center handles only small aircraft with a 3600
foot runway. Fairfield's is 5500 feet.
