I thought so. That was my instinctive take on it.

It's interesting to me that someone who rails on others for dishonesty of all sorts is actually the one who is consistently dishonest!

There's a principle in Islam where one is allowed to lie if it is to protect Islam. I think we see the same phenomenon in various systems of belief, where anything is fine if it is to protect the 'purity of the teaching', even if that means being dishonest in argumentation, intention and methods.
