I prefer the second version.  It loads much, much faster, and the 
thumbnails let you choose which pictures you'd like to see in the larger 
version.  Plus, I just think it looks neater <g>

I use Easythumb, and that programme lets you both create thumbnails and 
create an html file to go with them, creating all the necessary links for 
you without borders.  You get to control how many thumbnails on a line, and 
the size of the thumbnails too and, but putting a certain number in a 
folder, how many go in a page.  I don't, however, think it lets you do the 
javascript pop ups that you seem to have on the second page, but to be 
honest I've never looked.  I just like my simple capture archive <g>
