I understand your concern for modifying the core, even if it's just for this special need. It just seems to be a necessary evil in a shared environment, at least until the CFimport tag allows a variable path....if I understand it correctly. I guess I'll know more as I dive in.
I agree this has potential to cause a confusion if it's not done properly, but I also think that's the very reason to document it. It is a shame to have to bother with it at all.
