While I can see this approach being okay for content which is only displayed in one place on the site, I can think of situations where such content might need to be displayed in multiple places. In such cases, presumably the ordering of the data would need to be maintained separately for each occurrence. This might prove to be somewhat counter-intuitive to the client.
I think what I was looking for ideally was a way to define a property for a content type which would be used solely for defining the order or perhaps the 'importance' of each content item in relation to all other items.
