You'll be pleased to know that the following ft:metadata is available in 6.x 
array formtool:

ftAllowCreate:  Allows user create new record within the library picker
ftAllowEdit:    Allows user edit new record within the library picker
ftAllowSelect:  Allows user to select existing records within the library picker
