Hi, well, you really ARE a pessimist. Many Linux distros use .rpm, and if you simply wanna try something, then you can uninstall .rpm very easily. No trash left (I know, when you uninstall for example MS Office from Windows, lots of files are left behind for certain versions).
If you do not like it that a .rpm wants to install at a certain place (again, same for Windows: Lots of packages insist on installation on C:, no matter if C: is full and D: has gigs of space free), you can do one of three things: - move the package to somewhere else, in some cases you have to place symlinks to make package files visible at the default place. In any case, you are in control which of your partitions holds the files. - learn the fine details of .rpm and .deb management and INSTALL the package to somewhere else right away. - download the sourcee and compile yourself, which gives you full control over where you want to install the files. As the recommended version of Dosemu, 1.1.3, is only available as source code anyway, has an easy-to-use mouse frontend for the compilation, and is even meant to be installed in ANY directory, you should start with some practical experiments instead of complaining about lots of Linux things. Yes, Linux has permissions. So has Win NT/2000/XP. This allows you to - install a system and come back in a year and be sure that the users did not trash it in the meantime - remove a virus from your documents and be sure that your software did not get infected at the same time, and that only one user of a multiuser system got installed. So get used to it. If you cannot, work as ROOT all day long. Your choice. Yes, RPM have default install directories. So what? If you install a DOS program and fail to put it into the PATH, it will not run smoothly, too. If you move things around, you have to take care that the files of one package find each other. You can do this in Linux. You do this very often with DOS and do not feel bad about it. You have a hard time doing this in Windows sometimes. Whatever. Use RPMs that are meant for your Distro is you want everything to be very easy. Otherwise, be at least a little bit flexible. In any case, you can uninstall RPMs easily (and DEBs), so trying things out does not actually force you to use a RAMDISK. This is DOS style of trying things. Sorry for the rant, but this is my opinion about the issue. Feel free to convince YOUR Linux distributor to create a smooth Dosemu 1.1.3 DEB/RPM, you will certainly not be the only one that will like it. But if you like experimenting with DOS stuff, I assume you are flexible enough to roll your own Dosemu from source to fit your needs better than the RPM that you found.
