On my Debian/GNU Linux SERVER I've had to compile 0% of the programs that
I use. On my Linux wks at home hmmm well 0%. To be totally honest I did
compile one thin: the kernel, but that was only because I wanted to.

The DOS box at home: 0%

So you _really_ do _not_ have to be a programmer to use linux. you don't
even have to know what a compiler is. I don't even have a compiler
installed on my server (makes it a teeny-weeny bit harder to crack, nobody
can compile any crack-tools on-site)

you just say apt-get install program, and then wait, and/or answer some
questions for the installer. This will download and install the program.
When you get tired of the program you say apt-get --purge remove program
(--purge is to remove any config files).

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
