I believe, just from what people have told me, it's once you pass all 8 Fe1s that the clock will start ticking.
It is ludicrous that the law society don't state this fact clearly on the application form for the exam. As it is necessary to secure an apprenticeship before commencing the PPC1, it is blatantly obvious to the law society that the numbers passing the exam surpass greatly the amount of apprenticeships available. Yet with each sitting the society disregard this fact and collect more and more examination fees, without properly informing applicants of this situation. Thus on the balance of probabilities, especially in the current economic climate, many people passing the exam will find it very difficult to find an apprenticeship within the 5 year period, so because of this arbitrary statute of limitations, they will be forced to re-sit these exams again and pay another minimum of €840 to the law society. As it stands, it appears the law society and the government are happy to maintain the status quo. It is up to those of us that may be affected by this five year limitation period to lobby the relevant authority, be it the law society or the government. An alternative to re-sitting the FE1s could be to introduce an exam similar to those sat by lawyers outside the jurisdiction seeking to practice in Ireland, or even have the limitation period extended if needs be. Anyway, it looks like it will be up to all those of us affected to try and initiate a change to this time limit. For a start it would be worth writing to our local TD's, and bring this issue to their attention. Surely it will be better than waiting for the clock to stop ticking!
