Actually Deadhouse Gates was my least favorite book of the series too! SE writes battles better than anyone out there, so it's no wonder I couldn't put the book down even thou I knew it couldn't be a good outcome. If it wasn't for the running battle with Coltaine and the Historian against those terrible odds, I may have never finished the book. I know how important the book is to the rest of the series, the things that happened out on the boat with Gesler, Stormy, Ghost Hands and Felisin have a major impact later, plus the ending impacts the rest of military once the story gets out, but I can't get around my dislike of Felisin and Mallick Rel.
