So far I don't recall anyone mentioning C J Cherryh (pronounced
like the fruit) her Foregner series is a great character related read with
light tongue in cheek humor about the human condition: Also, L E Modesitt
Jr has several series, notably the Recluce saga, which are all good reads.
Ownership of Library of America card may help for you electronic readers,
as I am not sure of availability online. Both are multi-award winning
authors.
