Felt the same when reading Janny Wurtz’s Light & Shadow work. Chalk &
cheese from the empire series, which has more Ray’s flowing narrative
style. Just couldn’t get any emotional connection to the characters.
Stopped caring after a while.
I stopped reading Janny's Light and Shadow series after it seemed two books
in a row had the same plot:

Brother with shadow magic tries to build up an army. Brother with light
magic takes his army to try to stop him. Brother with shadow magic uses
magic to trigger light magic using brothers geas/beserk button. Light magic
using brother ends up badly damaging his own army by blasting wildly giving
show magic using brother time to escape.
