Hi Michelle
I suppose it stems from the "Bottom Line"...I had thought that it was 1000 animals per day that were PTS in shelters in the US...That would be just over 1/3 million per year...Last night I read a statement that it was between 12 million and 20 million...Thats like 35 thousand to 50 thousand every day...I hope thats wrong....

The feral people say that neutering a tom and releasing them will keep other males away from the colony but with my experiance with breeding when I neutered an old tom and replaced him with a younger tom the fertal tom took his place very smoothly...I am sure this happens in the wild as well....

I have been complaining on another list about animal control seazing animals from a horder who is keeping animals in less than optomal conditions but than AC puts most of the animals to sleep the same day they seaze them...Them I am sure the legal system spends thousands of dollars on court and jail time costs...
Wouldn't it make more sense to sit on these people and make them take care of their animals...Spend a few bucks on food if they are realy broke....

I am sure that a majority of people think we that are protecting what shortened life an FeLV+ cat has left are nuts...I am 68 years old and I know some of my cats will out live me and my partner and not all of them will be adopted...There are people who have taken in homless cats in the past but don't any more becouse of this...but doesn't that just mean that animals are being PTS that much sooner...

We can't save them all...In fact we only save 1 out of 5 that go to a shelter...
PETA is probable looking at the real life big picture and if killing a feral will save the life of a homeless cat that wants to be adopted into someones home maybe thats their thinking....
We on the other hand are free to pick out any small window of the big problem and help in the way we feel good about but I don't think we should totaly condem PETA....

Tad
PS..I mentioned breeding....That was years ago...Then I saw the light...I love my siamese that are left from my breeding but I love my cats that I save from being PTS just as much..Even my 2 feral FeLV+ cats that are still very shy of me but they have learned to enjoy inside living and learned to play with my other cats in their room..Someone said feral cats have to learn to play....

I can not believe PETA!!!!!!!  They used to be known as the most radical animal rights group around (at the time that I did belong to them).  This is welfarism at its very, very worst.  How can a group that says it is an animal rights group advocate catching and killing animals? Isn't the right to live out your life without being killed the most basic of rights? Without that right, what good is any other? They are insane.  I stopped contributing to them years ago based on other stances they took that I thought were crazy, but their position on ferals tops the cake.
