Once upon a time that was what most vets recommended. Waiting until a
dog or cat was over their first heat cycle before spaying. I know an
"old timer" vet that still recommends this to his patients.
Overpopulation being what it is, and studies about things like mammary
cancers, have changed the mindset on this. There's also the the fact
that the younger the being, the quicker the healing. All that said, I
don't think it would be detrimental to wait.
