This is getting CRAZY!!!!!! But the thing that really kills me is that the
tainted ingredient is one that we shouldn't be feeding our animals in the first
place!!! Cats and dogs don't eat grains - especially wheat - in the wild!!!

When I first found out Slink was felv+, I did a bunch of research and then
went to the natural pet food store near my house in somewhat of a panic because
most of what I read contradicted itself. The owner immediately said the most
important thing was to buy things that were GRAIN FREE (confirming much of my
research). That's why she recommended Innova Evo (or nature's variety...I
don't remember the name), but Slink only liked the Evo.

I would like to HOPE that by not having any wheat gluten in it at all (if, in
fact, the labels are accurate) there is at least significantly less risk of
contamination (even if it's manufactured on the same machinery it says it has
to be present in high concentrations, so it probably wouldn't have
enough...maybe). This is one reason I switched Slinky to raw food. I bought
it pre-prepared and frozen (because human meat is handled to be cooked, so it's
kept at warmer temps and bacteria can grow, whereas Nature's Variety stays
frozen)...and it definitely didn't have any wheat in it.

It's hard to know what to do at this point, though! Maybe preparing our own
is the solution...then even if the contaminated wheat got into human food we
can at least know we haven't put any wheat in the pets' food!

I wonder how long the list will grow before this is over! I have NO
confidence in the FDA et al to keep us and our furkids safe! Pretty sad.

  Hope you're all doing well.

It is driving me crazy that they, (the FDA, MF, Hills, who knows who
else), is aware of this US distributor of the Chinese wheat gluten, but
they won't "disclose" the information. Who the hell are they
protecting? Certainly not us or our animals. All I can pray is that we
are relatively "safe" by excluding all products, (wet, dry, or gravy
style), that contain any wheat gluten whatsoever. At this point I can
only pray that the damn labeling is accurate. It's so ironic that we
just had a discussion about feeding less expensive types of food in
order to make ends meet and provide for our charges as best we can. Who
would have guessed that so much of the food we serve has it's ingredient
origins in the same unreliable place, whether we thought it was
"quality" or not? Should we be concerned about all forms of
grain/rice? I don't have much confidence that our protectors at the FDA
are on top of any of this, or if they are, that they would let us in on
their findings.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm feeling so helpless.
