I've forwarded all of this great info off to many other lists, including the
Austin Petsitters' Assoc., who will be contacting all their clients I am sure.

So sad, when I worked @ the AHS I got to see first hand the damage of dog
fighting.

The shelter itself is not in the best part of town, and there were "people" in
the neighborhood breeding "fighting dogs"........

I was working in Animal Intake one day, which is in the back of the building.

I walked outside for some fresh air, and someone had tied a poor, starving,
overbreed pit to the backdoor.

To make matters worse, she had many of the scars from fighting (including the
cropped off ears) and she was dying of parvo.

She was just laying outside the door, and she was having "parvo blowouts" (if
you do not know what these are, please email me offlist. Too graphic)

Anyway, we called Animal Control to come pick her up, and in the meantime we
gave her some water.

She could not be brought into the shelter or even moved due to her infectious
disease, ( it would put shelter dogs @ risk even more) and it was sweltering
outside, being August or so......

Animal control did not show up after 2 hours, as I sat w/ her.

Finally we decided to just take her around to the other side of the building,
into the cat isolation area (cats cannot catch parvo) and give her the kind,
compassionate death that she deserved.

It was the lowpoint of my day to say the least.........

Oh and rest assured...I have my friends and whole family on it too. They are
animal people and they will definitely take action...but it's always a little
easier when someone else does the leg work for you!

    Thanks Wendy and Caroline!

I've been busily typing away to those companies/NFL/Falcons while I should
be working J. I thought your letter was very nice Caroline-and I'm also glad it
gives you something to fight for-something you can do in Monkee's honor.

Wendy- although their ready-made email is very handy, I always like to
personalize it. Just in case anyone wants an example of how I thought I could
(hopefully) effectively personalize my email....I have pasted mine here. So,
do you love it....or do you love it?!

Please suspend Michael Vick for his actions. And while you're at it, I
should think it would be big of the NFL to step up to the plate, for once, and
donate a couple thousand dollars to the National Humane Society to care for the
52 seized dogs from Vick's property. Right now they are depending on donations
for their care and it makes me sick to think of the billions of dollars your
organization has at it's disposal that could be put to a humane use. I myself
donated some money to help "clean up" Vick's mess and should think the NFL
could do the same, at the very least. I don't have much money to give myself
because I have spent hundreds of dollars caring for and treating my dying cat
for the past three months. I was fighting a losing battle against his cancer
and Leukemia, but did it anyway because he was my best friend, AND it was the
right thing to do. I lost my cat when he died in my arms early Monday morning.
Ponder that and know that I will never support the NFL or anything related to
it until drastic changes are made. I feel your organization really needs some
perspective.

    Sincerely,

    Caroline L. Kaufmann

This is the direct link from the National Humane Society's website to
tell the NFL Commissioner Goodell to suspend Vick. All you have to do is fill
in your info and send the email. It then lets your forward the same link to
friends' email addresses. It also gives you the option to donate money to help
the HS care for the 52 seized dogs (they are overseeing their care)...which I
find ironic because I personally feel Vick's million-dollar bank accounts
should be seized so that he is made to pay for their care (and intensive rehab,
no doubt). Or, the NFL should step the H up and donate a couple thou for that
purpose. Anyway, I'm in the hole myself from taking care of my sweet little
Monkee the past few weeks, but I gave what I could, which wasn't much. But we
do what we can...

falls through, is to write to the Falcons and tell them you don't want them to
renew his contract, or even better, let him go early. Right before football
season would be GREAT!!! It will hit him where he'll hurt the most. He won't
be able to do what he loves: play football. Also, write to any companies that
endorse him or that he's a spokesperson for. I need to research them and if I
find any, I'll get them to you. That will also hit him in the pocketbook.
