This is just wonderful. Thanks for sending it to me. To think I got all these
wonderful emails because of a little kitty (Mandy) I adopted yesterday (my
birthday) and found out today she is Felv positive. She does not have symptoms
(except a lessening of vision) so I am going to keep her (isolated from my
other 6 cats) as long as she enjoys life. I found your site when trolling thru
the Internet to see what I could find on the disease.

Oh how ironic! Last month, I made my first trip to New Orleans & it was a
last minute trip to transport a cat, Tigger, to his little girl Taylor!.
Tigger had gone to HOPE Safehouse and got adopted by someone in NY. Most of
the HOPE Safehouse pets did come from Best Friends who had set up a staging
area at St. Francis in Tylertown, MS. Hate to say it, but most of the pets
came out of people's homes-they were not preKatrina shelter pets.

Maybe you recognize Tigger from your work at the shelter-he's a pretty
distinctive little guy and his litte girl wanted him back so very badly. I
can't describe the expression on her face when she first saw him after all this
time. He's doing well back home and never missed a beat. When he first got
there, he sort of walked around, ate, and then proceeded to jump on Taylor's
bed like he always did-one thing about cats-they do love their creature
comforts!

Here's two videos of Tigger's reunion:

the lostkatrinapets video; she's the volunteer who actually found Tigger and
worked all these months to get him home to Taylor & her mom Sheila-all I did
was accompany Tigger home)

Chris, it kills me to think of all these people looking for their pets to
this day. I volunteered during the Katrina crisis at a local shelter, H.O.P.E.
Safehouse, in Racine, Wisconsin. They didn't have a lot of resources, and I
know they listed some but possibly not all of the animals on PetFinders. There
were days when they had massive numbers of "incomings" to evaluate and vet,
they may have fallen behind in some aspects. I did ask someone there about
whether the pets might have people waiting for them somewhere, but they said
the pets they got were from shelters down there, sorry I don't know which ones,
but were animals that had already been surrendered by owners. I doubt that
they had the time or resources to do a detailed search of the databases set up
by people trying to get their pets back, so it's very possible a wanted pet
slipped through the cracks on H.O.P.E.'s end. They're wonderful, caring people
but operating on a shoestring. I do know that one gorgeous boy's human was
able to reconnect with him, and we all wept copiously over him on the day he
left to go back to his family in New Orleans. When H.O.P.E. finally had to shut
down its temporary shelter, many of the pets had gone to foster homes and some
went to other shelters in the Midwest.

Thank you so much. I just realized what a job your shelter did! They were
there very early on---did they work with anyone in particular or did they work
out of Lamar Dixon. I'm always interested in talking to folks who might have
been at some of the staging areas or doing rescues-sooooo many people found
notices on their houses that their pets were rescued but then could never find
them! We've actually found a few of these 'lost in system' pets by finding &
talking to rescuers who could help us track the animals from day one! Sounds
like your group worked hard for reunions-BRAVO to you. Sadly, too many groups
went out of their way NOT to return animals. I guess disasters bring out the
best and the worst in people!

Our shelter, ALL CATS INC, rescued and return to families more than 3,000
Katrina pets. I have forwarded your message to as many people as I know of.

Thank you so much. These are just a handful of the hundreds of pets folks
have never stopped looking for. Many owners lost any pictures of their pets
they had in the flooding. What's maddening is that for many of them, there are
pictures AFTER the pets were rescued but no can tell them where their pet went
to!

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the link. I posted the You Tube clip on my web page. With a
little blurb about Hurricane Fran in 1996 that came aboard Topsail, NC as a Cat
3 direct hit to a fragile little island.
