I am fine with the drawing blood in the back. But I agree, they have to examine the cat in front of you. Monkee's regular vet was like that-- he did the examine in front of me. He would administer shots in front of me. He would even use the scope to look in Monkee's ears for wax balls way way down in the canal (Monkee and I constantly battled these) and I got to see the picture of his ear canals on the tv in the room. The only thing they did "in the back" was draw blood. This was the only way Monkee could have been treated because he was such a baby and a mommy's baby at that, that he really did want/need me there to calm him. He also was afraid/hated men, so I never wanted him left alone with a strange man.
When we had to switch to the "hospital-style" vet for Monkee's cancer treatment, that is when it all went down hill. The vet examined him initially in front of me, but after that, it was all in the back. They always wanted you to drop the cat off in the morning and pick him up at the end of the day (when he was getting chemo that sometimes only took 45 mins?)- I never wanted to do this b/c the clinic was so far out, it took too much time up in the day AND mostly b/c Monkee hated being at a hospital where he could hear dogs barking! I only left him there one time and that was for the blood transfusion and I retrieved him as soon as I could get there.
The one thing that really bothered me is that I don't think they ever weighed Monkee- I am serious- they just went with his weight from Monkee's regular vet. Which made no sense to me because he was on an appetite stim and getting chemo-- they should have weighed him everytime and reported to me his weight. Neither ever occured and about the time I decided to "pick" this bone with them, it was too late and Monkee was going downhill rapidly. But I will never make the same mistake again. I refuse to go to a vet who does everything in the back like that.

I had a vet like thatalways taking them to the back to draw blood, but they did examine in front of me. I just wasnt comfortable with all this back room stuff. Wouldnt let them do that to a child, so not to my kitties. I switched vets. Good luck to you! I hope you find a perfect vet!

I waited and took him in at 8:00. My normal vet's office had NO DOCTOR on site until 2:00! So I tried another vet that has been recommended.
She said that a culture had not been done last week and recommended taking him off the baytril saying that she thought that was causing him an upset stomach/intestines etc.... causing problems with defecating.
About $1000 bucks later we did an x-ray that showed no stones. A major blood work up, a complete thyroid panel, and a leukemia test (just in case).
I was told to take him off antibiotics and put him on lactolose because his x-rays showed a huge amount of fecal matter. When he's off antibiotics I am to take him back in for a urine culture.
That's the short version. I am so upset that my vet sold her clinic. The vet that took over that I took him to last week, just pulled a urine sample and put him on baytril. She didn't even examine him in front of me. Everything there is done 'in the back' now.
This new vet seemed very informed and good, but again, they want to take them to the back to draw blood, urine, etc.... and I just don't like this....

Subject: anyone out there this morning?
My cat Bob (negative) has a kidney infection and I took him to the vet last Thursday. The doctor put him on antibiotics and said he was not blocked. This morning when I got up there was blood on the sheet where he had been lying and his rectal area seems red and raw. Does this have anything to do with the kidney infection, or would this be something totally different? I'm trying to decide if I should call in sick and take him to the vet first thing this morning or wait till after work. He had deficated one small very dry poo this morning along with the bloody places. He acts ok...............
Bob has a history of this and has been operated on for stones before. The area around his penis looks fine..........
