You can be certain he wouldn't have said he hated dogs. But it's OK & acceptable to hate cats. It's funny, when people come to the shelter I usually ask them whether they're looking for a cat or a dog. I can't tell you how many times someone has responded, "Dogs. I hate cats." But I've never heard anyone say, "Cats. I hate dogs."
