I know that it is suggested that after a cat is first tested for FIV/FeLV, it should be done again in 3 months. Unfortunately, that's something that most rescues cannot afford to do...not just cost, but keeping a cat isolated for three months. It also depends on when a cat might have been exposed. We had a cat for over 10 years, she had been tested when first trapped - she had 6 kittens. All but one kitten was adopted (we kept last one, a huge Maine Coon look -mom was tiny short-hair) - anfd ALL cats when tested after we found out about Shana, were negative. I found over the years that all the FIV+ moms NEVER had kittens that were positive. Sadly, it's a lot different with FeLV. Shana (named after our dog), didn't like cats a lot - she loved our big dog. When he died, she became sick-looking; after being checked out, we found that she was FIV+....we had no other FIV+ cats that could have infected her, besides, they would have been kept separated from other healthy ones. Shana could have been "just exposed" at the time of her blood tests, and in her case, waiting 3 months for re-checking would have been ideal. But all was well, she didn't infect anyone....and she was one of our own because no one wanted to adopt an adult cat.....

She is now in the large isolation room at my private shelter where she is gaining weight and looks just great. I want to get her shots, and have her tested for FelV, but wondered how long the incubation period is for FelV. If she was exposed to FelV I think I need to wait about 6 weeks til it would show up in the Elisa test, but I'm not sure....... Does anyone in the group know?
