I've used L-lysine capsules over the years just fine--same ones people
take. Buy them at a health food store. For an adult, average sized cat
(8-12 pounds +/-), buy the 500 mg capsules, open them up, and use roughly
half mixed in with a can of cat food,or equivalent. Ideally, you use 250
in the morning,250 in the evening. During flare-ups you can dose as high as
1000a day,given in two doses, split equally. It is nearly impossible for
a cat to overdose on L-lysine as it is water soluble and what is not used
is peed out right away. And, the treatment will probably need to be
given for life,for the same reason. It works only when you give it, and it
must be given every 12 hours (twice a day).
Lysine supplements also come in a variety of products formulated as treats,
paste, powder, tablets and chews, so it’s easier for cats to take, too,but
I have always used the 500 mg capsules.
