Welcome to the list Mary Catherine and I'm so happy someone like you took in
these babies and did NOT allow that idiot vet to put them to sleep. There's
much you can do. Please see my very recent post to new member William
Groth...

any questions, do not hesitate to ask. You will be inundated with
information and it's new to you and could be a lot to take it...

>Hi, I just joined this list. I live in Baltimore, Maryland and about a
>month
>ago took in 3 stray cats that were from the same litter about 7 - 9 months
>old. I had them tested last Saturday and two tested positive for FeLV (a
>male and a female). The other male was negative. The vet offered to put
>them to sleep right away. I didn't want to do that as I have become quite
>attached to them and took them home. I have been trying to find out
>information about the virus and what to do. I already had four cats before
>I
>got these strays. I don't want the original four cats to get the virus. I
>have been keeping the strays separated from the rest of the cats since I
>took
>them in. The strays seem very healthy now and are beginning to feel
>comfortable enough at my home to start playing with cat toys. I would like
>to
>keep them but the more I read the more confused I get about what the right
>thing to do is. Seems like so much controversy on the subject. Help!!!!
>I
>am feeling like this is a nightmare...... or a catch-22 situation. I tried
>to separate the negative stray from his positive litter mates (as the vet
>told me to do) and he stopped eating and hid himself and wouldn't come out,
>so when he finally did come out I just put him back with his litter mates
>and
>he is eating again. The vet wanted me to have the negative stray tested in
>a
>month to see if he was still negative (of course that was contingent on me
>keeping him isolated). I will try to advertise to have the strays adopted,
>but people are pretty discouraging about that too, saying no one will want
>them.
