I think you did the right thing.  If her kittens were alive, she would not have left 
them to leave with you.

Too bad we so far apart...a couple of weeks ago I could have used a nursing mother 
cat!  (First few pictures of my kittens are at www.birdnest.org/wellsj/orphans.htm )  
(now tell me, is there anything in the world cuter than 8 week old kittens?  I think 
NOT!)
