Hi, First: I think the best thing for you to do is call a Vet and ask if
they can get it from a rodent.
Second: If an infected animal drooled on the fence they could get it
that way. Also if an infected animal drooled on the ground and you
stepped in it you could take it to your cats. Most of the time it is
passed thru drooling not by actual contact.
Third: Why weren't they given shots against it?
Fourth: If you don't want to take them to a vet for the shots you can
give them yourself. I do so hope they don't get it because it is a very
painful death. There is only one vet I know of in the San Francisco Bay
