I don't know about the different strains vs different exposure. Of 3 feral
kittens pulled from my local colony... 1 tested neg at 7 weeks.. strong
positive at 12 weeks. His obvious sibling strong at 12 weeks. The third
kitten may have been from a different mother... he was a light pos at 12
weeks. At 4 1/2 to 5 months the two strong positives are still strong
positive, the light pos kitten threw the virus and has since been adopted.
I suppose it could be different strains, I suspect different exposure...
although all mingled together in quarantine for 3 months.

I realize that my 2 kittens I have been trying to place may be with me to
the end... tough when I see the fat healthy bundles of cuddles quarantined
in my guest room. I guess I need to find a Felv+ sympathetic vet in the
area. Anyone have experience with a longer life expectancy than 2 years for
kittens exposed in utero?

Thanks... feeling a bit at a loss today.

I don't think there is a test, but I was talking to my vet about this
very thing last time she was here. I asked her if she thought there
were more virilent strains and she said yes she did. Bailey has always
tested a weak positive and he has had no problems to speak of (other
than his teeth just this year and he has been positive atleast since 5
months of age, he is now 9 1/2 years old), my Teenye was also a weak
positive before she turned negative. She was an adult at the time she
was tested, back in 92' and in 93' when she was retested she was
negative and remained negative for the rest of her life, I lost her at
age 16 to a rare form of cancer. My other 3 all tested positive and I
lost all of them within 15 months to cancer and anemia. Buddie the last
of my original 5 always tested negative, I just lost her in July to
liver cancer. So I do think that myself and have for a long time.
