Many of the Feline Leukemia vaccinations come in the
"Modified Live" virus form which is NOT a "Killed"
vaccine; therefore, DOES poses a threat to any cat who
may have converted from a FeLV negative status to a
FeLV positive status.

It is the veterinarian's decision to decided which
version of the vaccine (Modified Live or Killed)
he/she carries at their hospital/clinic.

As a pet guardian, you may request that the
veterinarian use only the "Killed" version, but if
he/she don not carry that particular type you can
always ask him/her to place a special order for you
and get the vaccination at a later time.

Otherwise, you can always locate another veterinarian
who carries the "Killed" version of the FeLV vaccine.

Nevertheless, a FeLV positive cat should absolutely
NEVER receive a FeLV vaccine, regardless if it is a
"Killed" or "Modified Live" version. By doing so will
place the cat's health in great risk and can result in
death.

I just wanted to jump in here. This is is not really
correct. The FeLV vaccination will not hurt a + kitty
any more than any other vaccination.

The FeLV vaccination is a KILLED VIRUS. It can not
cause the virus or cause a "double dose" of it.

If the cat already has the virus, then its body is
already trying to fight it and there are already
antibodies. The vaccination will not "double dose" the
cat with the virus.

However, it will not do them any good either for
obvious reasons.

Vaccinations in general are a different story and
again a personal preference. Many will not give them
past the initial kitten vaccination. They believe it
just harms the immune system and is unnecessary. I
believe this, with the exception of the FeLV
vaccination for my negatives, since I mix mine.

"IF you decide to vaccinate Pilgrim with the FeLV
vaccination now that she is can not currently
negative, I cannot stress to you enough the importance
of having her tested BEFORE ANY vaccinations are
given.

This is due to the fact that IF she does convert back
to a FeLV positive status you DO NOT want to have the
FeLV vaccination administered. It would be a
double-dose of the virus and will only make her more
sick, if not kill her. Once her immune system is
compromised with the Feline Leukemia it most likely
will NOT withstand another attack from the
vaccination."
