One other big thing: Improvements to faac helps many people right now.
People do (sadly) use faac for things. Improving the lavc encoder
really only helps you and me until it's fit to merge, and who knows
when that could be.
That's true. On the other end, lavc encoder helps all users of lavc.

Well, I was under the assumption that this was about the bigger
question of having a free aac encoder, and if Alex chooses to improve
libfaac and remove non free parts, then FFmpeg would still benefit.
The project was started before the problem of license arised. The goal
of the project is to have an internal aac encoder.
Should we stop having internal decoders/encoders ?
