I don't know about startling, but I really like onion skins for
the twofold yellow I get from them with regular dyeing alum and tartaric
acid; the first bath is deep 'old gold' sort of color and later baths
are a more clear yellow. Over dyeing the first batches with indigo gives
more olive greens while later ones are a little brighter greens.
