Unfortunately I found that onion skin colors were quite fugitive in
sunlight.
I once did a small batch of onion and tin - giving an international safety
color (yes, I did make knit caps) and the kids wore them through what I
thought was a rather sunless winter. Nevertheless, come spring, they were a
very dull color on the outside and the original shade on the inside.
I've used other substances for yellow since then.
