Since there haven't been too many responses, I will
give my non very knowledgeable contribution. Tin and
chrome (the most toxic of the standard mordants) are
considered to give the brightest shades. I think that
good old alum should give some nice results, though
not as bright.
Hope someone is going to save all the veg peelings for
compost! - wish I could be there with my pail.
