I am going to join this fray!
I think that by instigating this amount of discussion, Spin-Off is doing
exactly what a magazine should do, namely, be thought-provoking and
promote discussion.
I always want Spin-Off to enlarge my handspinning knowledge and to lead
me onto parallel paths of where I have been treading. Because I prefer
wool, I can be very disappointed when an issue contains what seems like
too much cotton or silk or some other area in which I am just really not
interested.
However, when I was given some angora, where did I turn? Immediately to
old past issues. When I wanted to try solar dyeing, where did I turn?
Exactly to the plast Spin-Off issues I had not been thrilled with at the
time they came out.
There were many complaints (mine, too) when it seemed that the magazine
was totally involved in the technical aspects of spinning. The technical
aspects are important for certain projects. But, perhaps the swing in
the other direction now, is upsetting those technical (WPI,etc.)
spinners the most.
I am really enjoying this Spin-Off issue because I find that the
editorial content is diverse. It doesn't make me mad that I don't agree
with some of it. Not agreeing makes me conscious of why I disagree and
why I think and work the way I do.
Remember that we all want it to be Spring and that the magazine cover
does denote a seasonal change! Do we really want a Spring issue cover to
have dark, dramatic colors? And handspun is to be used for all kinds of
diverse projects, including wearables. When I first started spinning, I
needed the reassurance that my handspun and intermediate knitting skills
could be combined into a wonderful project. This cover would have been
my dream!
I just hope that the summer issue still has some wool in it!
