I don't usually say much on this list, preferring to
lurk instead, but I just had to add my two cents worth
to the discussion. As a spinner who also weaves, but
has been too chicken to do much with her hand-spun
yarn in weaving projects, I found this issue to be
inspiring! I was very impressed with the idea that
someone actually had the perseverence to take a
project right from start to finish. Especially
spinning cotton, not my favorite fiber to spin owing
to its short fiber. I was in awe that she managed to
spin enough to complete this. And, don't forget, with
weaving, you have to spin enough for loom waste too,
not just the finished project. There was also a short
discussion on what to look for in cotton spinning
fiber, and how she spun it. The silk vest project
went right to my heart, as I've been interested in
spinning and weaving an outfit for my wedding, but
didn't have the guts. We are so hooked into using our
yarns for knitting, that we forget that originally
this is how clothes were made--spinning first, then
weaving them.
There are several times when an issue comes in, and I
think, "ho-hum, not much of interest here". But later
on, I find myself returning back to those same issues,
as I grow in my craft, and new things interest me.
Don't be so hasty to judge. I was happy to see these
articles, happy to see stuff on kumihimo, bobbin lace,
and spinning for book-binding. Closed minds aren't
very creative. Plus, this is a massive enterprise
that this new editor is taking on. I certainly
wouldn't care to have to put out a magazine of this
scope and technical difficulty. She will have new
ideas, and it won't be the same magazine, but that's
good! Cut her some slack while she's getting her feet
underneath her.
The only serious complaint I have about Spin-Off is
that it only comes out four times a year!
