You take a piece of non-stretchy material, and use that to measure the
whorls. Then you do the math.

Hmm. Based on your past messages, I got the impression that you haven't
used this method, which would mean that you don't have first hand knowledge
as its accuracy. If I'm incorrect, I'm sure you will correct me. :)
If you have used it, please tell us how inaccurate the math method was,
compared to counting the treadles.
I gotta tell you, if the math method is good enough for Lee Raven, it's
good enough for me. :)
