Dear Fibernetters,

My daughter often asks me ... "why are you making that?!?" I keep
finding that I can make things out of wool that maybe shouldn't be
made of wool, but I have lots of wool and an overactive imagination.
I had been making "Wool Wizards", which are large "dolls", I suppose.
(I think I wrote about these before) They are old guys with magic
sheep that spin and weave and crochet. ... with lots of the pieces
parts made of hand dyed, hand made felt, hand spun yarns and just
wool.

The Wizards are large and so I decided I would try some smaller ones.
These are "Santa's Spinning Elves". They have drop spindles and are
crocheting scarves. It came to me too that I should make some
knitting sheep too, so that's coming next. These guys have polymer
faces which I make one at a time and hand paint. The bodies are sewn
and stuffed, then the fun part is making all of their assorted other
pieces parts.

I've thought about this and have come to the conclusion that it all
must have something to do with a doll I had when I was little. It
was one of those old fashioned ones with the porcelain head, arms and
legs. I didn't play with it ... I sewed for her ... long calico
dresses with lace and pretty buttons. I never stopped liking dolls
and stuffed animals, so maybe that's where SOME of this comes from.

Its all quite frivolous ... a departure I suppose from moving hay,
sheep, and manure around.
