I'm just curious - but you didn't mention *why* you washed them as such. Surely that's not how you wash wool sweaters? And don't give up hope - if the skeins ties are still holding, see if you can't gently rip them back into yarn strands. It might be impossible, or it might not be worth the effort, but give it a try.
