What is your purpose in retaining the lock structure?  I personally
don't find it much necessary, even when spinning from the lock.  I just
pull the staples from the mass of wool.  I don't find there's a lot of
waste, if I'm careful to not felt the wool while dyeing/washing.

If the lock structure is very important, then probably sausages are your
best bet.
