I think Mother Nature may have had a more utilitarian idea with the outer
coat--to protect the animal from the cold and wet of the Shetland Islands,
by keeping the animal as dry as possible, so the softer fibers could keep
it warm.

Ack! Here I've been told it's the US breeders that want to eliminate the
guard fiber, to get more of the softer fibers.

Anyone know if it's true that the guard fibers don't grow back, after the
first shearing?
