How sad. Sounds like not just poor residents, but also lousy tax policies. The rich seasonal should be taking a big hit to pay for basic services to the year-round residents. Obscure has nothing to do with it..Ron writes:<<Is there not such a thing as Interlibrary Loan in most of the US? I was almost a;ways able to get almost any book that way from very rural western Minnesota.>> Most of the US, yes; here, NO. The ILL here is limited to northern lower Michigan counties, all of which are sparsely populated and (except when invaded by rich seasonal people) very poor. I might be able to get recent bestsellers via ILL, but not obscure textile books--or even current textile books. I've tried.
Have you ever thought about running for office or lobbying? That is how it works. A really squeaky wheel gets lots of grease. Get with local and regional newspapers and the like. Ask librarians what they need. It can be done. It takes work, but it is possible. If you get a group together, you can do more than you imaginePlus the library closest to us, easiest to access, we can't use because we don't live in their service district and they don't accept the "Michicard" which allows patrons to use other libraries.
Politicians see libraries and librarians as easy targets who won't fight back. Fight back! Votes are everything to those scoundrels so start telling them how many votes they will not get at the next election. Hey - attack! It is the American way to get things done in the local venue. So, for the first time in our lives, we don't use the library...a situation I don't like at all,
Not to be sorry. If you don't have one, make one, or at least jack up the ones that exist.Sorry about the mini-rant :) It hurts to not be able to use a half-way decent library!
