I bought one for my Ashford Traditional(s) at Convergence. It works well, BUT it does add friction to the general equation - and the treadling/tension gets a bit harder. It doesn't work as well at the higher speeds, though for plying on the slow whorl its wonderful.
I'm not surprised. I looked at them at the same Convergence, and it was clear that they were well built and all that, but the design was for a lot heavier-duty work than spinning. The WooLee Winder is a great idea that has to be lightened up using nylon and plastic and other light-weight materials. The ubiquitous Japanese Wool Winders for making yarn balls come to mind - cheap, and long lasting.
