the Middle Eastern wheels were the wheels now known as "table top charkhas" - if you watch eBay for spinning wheel auctions, you'll often see someone selling one from Pakistan, Turkey or elsewhere in the middle east. Often the drive wheel was simply two sets of spokes with string crosses making the path for the drive band. They were fitted with either a flyer or a spindle - have seen examples of both.
