Hi Anita, I've worked with the wheel and dowel spindles. It's sort of a guess and a 'feel' for when the shaft of the spindle is the right length. I'd take the completed spindle, and put the shaft across my first finger. There's a point where everything balances. I stopped doing that, and just made a guess as to where everything felt balanced. If you want a measurement, I'd say between 7-8" long, for the shaft. wrnk d2
