Washability of a sheepskin depends, I understand, on the tanning process used. Some tanneries advertise washable results, some don't.

I recently washed one of our washable sheepskins. I used warm water, standard laundry detergent (liquid with no dyes or perfumes), and delicate cycle. I tumbled it partly dry on low, then let it finish drying draped over a chair. Nothing else was in the washer or dryer.

It was a longish Shetland wool, black in color, and did suffer a little from the process--some of the wool seemed to come out and felt a little. I was able to pull those tufts off with no problem, and there was no obvious lack of wool anywhere on the pelt. The skin side is fine. We have VERY HARD water here, no water softener, and I didn't put any salt in the water.

Another option for killing the moths is to zap the infested item in the microwave. I don't know if your skin will fit in there, or what it might do to the leather. I would imagine a short zap--2-3 minutes--would do the trick, and not hurt it, but it's just a guess. Put in a cup of water at the same time, as a heat sink.
