You figure it out by weight of the yarn and gauge.  I do
know that you will need approximately 2 pounds of yarn for
a medium woman's sweater, but that would also depend on the
pattern and style of the sweater.  Once you have the
pattern, look at the yarn recommended and it should not
only tell you the yardage but the weight as well.  Then
SWATCH, SWATCH, SWATCH and adjust according to what you
gauge you get from your swatch.
