It's a matter of grammar and advertising.
One down plus another down = two downs.
If I wanted to sell sheep from the Downs region I would surely not
mention the others who used the name 'down', and compare my sheep
with competitor's stock from nearby regions. My sheep are XYZdown
sheep. There are no others!
No sources beyond the long term nature of people trying to sell
something to a possibly susceptible buyer.
